Technical problems continue
Monday, December 11th, 2006I’m still having a heckuva time getting (and staying) online. The phone co. assures me this problem will be corrected soon. Let’s hope!
I’m still having a heckuva time getting (and staying) online. The phone co. assures me this problem will be corrected soon. Let’s hope!
For those of you who’ve been wondering if the Elementary Chef packed her knives and went, no, it’s only technical difficulties!
Every couple of years one of the massive lettuce rigs roaming the county at this time of year has a confontation with a telephone pole. The telephone pole usually loses!
As it did down the road from us a few days ago.
We are now back online, albeit with the slowest connection I’ve seen in years. 33k! Yikes!
The phone company assures us we’ll be back up to speed soon. We can only hope…
Things have been so busy here at my house we’re actually having leftovers tonight for dinner! Yikes!
Anyhoo, in addition to getting another job of the “regular” variety, (the kind where you go to work, turn in your time, get a paycheck, etc.) I’ve been invited to contribute material to a BIG blog with lotsa readers known as Dean’s World. Over there, I’ll be stretching my politcal/social commentary muscles. This is exciting for me, because it means I can put in my two cents on a lot of things, without the extra work of mainatining a blog for the purpose. Dean’s World is different from a lot of blogs in that it has a variety of viewpoints from several different people, so you’ll never know what the topic of discussion will be on any given day.
Dean is also co-author of Methuselah’s Daughter, one of the most innovative novels I’ve seen. It started out with a blog, and became, well, why not take look yourself?
The “regular” job I mentioned is also exciting. I’ll be tracking prices of all kinds of things, which of course, is right up my alley. The money won’t hurt, and I also get to go to Washington DC for training! Yippee!
This could be fun — kindalike driving around to look at the Xmas lights, only seeing the inside decorations without leaving home! See the photos here.
There’s also a sweepstakes to enter. Here.
Prizes are:
1. Grand Prize Winner: $3,500 toward a home makeover
2. 25 First Prize Winners: A Swiffer WetJet
3. 6 Weekly Winners: A year’s supply of Swiffer Products
Renata has been working hard to gather new recipes for all of us to enjoy, and the Carnival of the Recipes is now up for your viewing pleasure! Thanks are doubly owed to Renata because she is a first-time volunteer and because she did all of this work in her second language. (I guess she didn’t name her blog A Geek Family for nothing.) Renata keeps her own favorite recipes in a special place on her blog, if you want to check those out too.
The theme this week was not after-Thanksgiving leftovers, but many of the recipes seemed to follow that idea, so I just went with it.
I hope all of you had a Thanksgiving full of thanks and giving and great food shared with family and friends.
Next week’s Carnival will be hosted by World Famous Recipes. Send your recipes or links to recipe.carnival@gmail.com by noon CST on Saturday. If you’re interested in hosting a future carnival send a message to the same address with the word host in the subject line.
For a line-up of future Carnivals, visit our Carnival of the Recipes page on Blog Carnival. You can also review all past Carnival of the Recipes there too.

How to Save Money Without Using Coupons!
I wrote this awhile back. It was originally intended to be a book, but I never got that far. The basic information is there, though. You may find it helpful.
Seasonal produce
There’s a monthly calendar here which shows which produce items are in season when. This is good to know, since out-of-season produce is expensive, if it’s available at all.
Grocery Shopping for One or Two
This site by Ohio State University has a little chart to help you figure out how much stuff to buy.
Nutrient DataThis USDA website allows you to enter a kind of food and find out what nutrients are in it. You can also look for a nutrient, such as fat, calories, and a range of vitamins and minerals, and find what foods contain those nutrients.
Here’s the latest on the carnival of the recipes from Shawn Lea at everything and nothing:
Wiley and Janet at The BBQ General have been working hard to round up a roster of recipes we should all be thankful for, and the Carnival of the Recipes is now up for your viewing pleasure:
There’s something for everyone - from roast turkey accompaniments to roast possum. (No, that one wasn’t from this Mississippi girl. No roadkill jokes, please!)
I am thankful for all of you who volunteer to host - and for those of you who faithfully read what we post each week. In a way, it’s our own way of breaking bread together and giving thanks for the fellowship and friendship that our love of cooking has given us. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
Next week’s Carnival will be hosted by A Geek Family . Send links in to recipe.carnival@gmail.com by noon CST on Saturday. (If you don’t have a blog, e-mail recipes to recipe.carnival@gmail.com and they will be posted.) If you’re interested in hosting a future carnival send a message to the same address with the word host in the subject line.

Note: The Elementary Chef will be hosting this event January 7. I’ll keep you posted as to the theme!
Here’s the latest on this mega-popular carnival:
Adam at Men in Aprons has been working hard to round up great breakfast and brunch recipes for all of us to enjoy, and the Carnival of the Recipes is now up for your viewing pleasure.
Brunch is a late breakfast, so it’s fitting that this edition is a little late. Adam was having some hosting issues - but all’s well that ends well. Go grab yourself a mimosa and enjoy all of these new recipes - all in the name of research for Christmas brunch.Next week’s Carnival will be hosted by The BBQ General at . Send your recipes or links to recipe.carnival@gmail.com by noon CST on Saturday. If you’re interested in hosting a future carnival send a message to the same address with the word host in the subject line. (Thanks to all of you who responded to my shameless begging. Your willingness to volunteer is much appreciated.)

I was skeptical when Jeff Jarvis had his much-discussed run-in with Dell.
At the time, I’d had my Dell desktop for a while with no problems. Little did I know…
Spent a couple of hours yesterday on the phone trying to get them to stop trying to make an incompatible part work! They said no fewer than three times it was the wrong part, why couldn’t they just go with that and let me go about my business? That would’ve been cheaper and less aggravating for both of us.
Well, in spite of Dell’s best efforts I’m back with the old part and hobbling along. Hopes this holds us until we get the new box — from Gateway!
Things have been insanely moving at Chez Trudy. The kitchen at ELMChef has been subject to all kinds of changes. One day, media contacts, writing up proposals for stuff. YIKES!!!
Looks like I forgot to post! OMG!!!
Anyway, here’s one:
Alex at RDoctor Medical has been working hard to round up some healthy holiday recipes for us all to enjoy, and the Carnival of the Recipes is now up for your viewing pleasure: http://rdoctor.com/medical_link/?p=62. We are sorry for the delay this week, but our host had Internet problems this weekend. Be sure and leave him a comment to let him know his hard work is much appreciated.
Dr. Aleksandr Kavokin (aka Alex) earned degrees in medicine and immunology in Russia, then completed a surgery internship in the United States before heading off to work at a pharmaceutical company. With a lifelong interest in artificial intelligence, Dr. Kavokin, along with several mathematicians and cyberneticists, developed and launched “Doctor Robot”. The Web site provides an online questionnaire for patients to fill out, and it uses their answers to link their symptoms with diagnoses.
The site and the accompanying blog are a family affair. His brother, Oleg Kavokin, MD, a physician-cyberneticist, helps with the programming. My father, Alex Kavokin, PhD, also helps. He is a professor of mathematics and software engineering.
Next week’s Carnival will be hosted by Adam at Men in Aprons at www.meninaprons.net. The theme will be breakfast and brunch. Send your recipes or links to recipe.carnival@gmail.com by noon CST on Saturday. If you’re interested in hosting a future carnival send a message to the same address with the word host in the subject line. (Shameless begging: Please volunteer to host a future Carnival of the Recipes edition. After Adam, I don’t have any volunteers lined up, except for the Christmas edition on Dec. 23rd, which is taken. I know the holidays is a busy time for everyone, but y’all will get tired of me if I host every week until Christmas.)

For those of you who like to read as well as cook, I’ve got a review of Stephen King’s latest, Lisey’s Story, over at The Book Stacks.
Is there something unusual and downright odd you love, but nobody else you know would even think of eating? My husband really enjoys peanut butter and onion sandwiches, for example.
My local newspaper, The Yuma Sun, is collecting strange recipes. The whole article is here.
Contribute your weird recipes here.
Here’s all the info on the Carnival:
Nerd Mom at Nerd Family has been rounding up great recipes for us all today, and the Carnival of the Recipes is now up for your viewing pleasure: http://blog.nerdfamily.com/2006/10/carnival-of-recipes-114.html. Be sure and leave her a comment to let her know her hard work is much appreciated.
Nerd Mom is a nerd and a mom (thus her Nerd Mom name). She’s a Virgo and was born in the year of the Rabbit. She and Nerd Dad and Nerd Family live in Fresno, California. Find out more about Nerd Mom here (or just read her blog).

I misidentified our wine expert as he in yesterday’s post. This has been corrected. Sorry!
This reminds me of an e-mail discussion group I was in when I first went online in the 90s. One of our more active members in Europe was actually a girl and most of us thought otherwise. Until, that is, we got to know each other better. (Hard to get personal on some of those early lists, which often numbered their members in the thousands.) We spun off a smaller committee for one reason or another, and she was talking about her husband and kids one day. Roughly five years after the group started. There were a lot of red faces that day, I can tell you!
I used to have a blog about media, blogging, and a variety of other things. Most of my readers were writers, though, and on Wednesday I always had features for and about writers and writing.
I’m going to adapt this tradition for Basic Cooking. On Wednesdays, I’ll post a food story — something about a kitchen disaster, or maybe where stuff comes from, things like that. I’ll also point to good stories involving food, and blogs and websites I’ve discovered.
If you’ve got a food story or great website to share, please leave a note in the comments section or e-mail me here: twschuettATpeoplepcDOTcom
